Cairn Lantern
A sculptural floor-lamp reinterprets the street lanterns of the bygone eras. This handcrafted piece was originally meant to have a simple stand crowned by a jali latticework lampshade.
However, halfway through the making process the Corona pandemic brought the world to a standstill. Like for many people, this was an opportuinity for us to question many aspects of our lives that we had hitherto taken for granted. We found with everything going on around us, our work took a slight differernt direction; the geomety of the top part unravelled and deformed, and the stem started to look more and more like a cairn. The Gaelic Scottish term refers to stacked piles of stones used as signposts or trail markers in many parts of the world to guide human beings through rough terrains since prehistoric times.
The sculptural Cairn Lantern has evolved and acquired a symbolic meaning for us at these uncertain times.
